Amazon stated that to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing their investment over a long period of time, they will introduce advertisements in Prime Video shows in 2024. However, they aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers.
In the standard offering, advertisements will be included as subscribers are given a choice to update to their new-advertisement free option for an additional US$2.99 monthly. The pricing for different regions will be announced at a later date.
Prime members will be notified through mail several weeks before the implementation with the information on how to sign up for the advertisement-free option if they are keen.
This excludes live programming such as sports where Amazon already carries advertisements and will continue the practice in their premium package. Amazon’s new implementation makes it competitive with rival streamers such as Disney+ and Netflix where ad-supported tiers are already available.
