The 2023 Emmy Awards faced a notable decline in TV ratings, reaching an all-time low with 4.3 million viewers, a 27% drop from the previous year. By: Wee Yan Ling
The prestigious ceremony has struggled to retain its audience after airing on a unique Monday night slot and competing with an NFL playoff game and Iowa caucus coverage. This clash with major sporting events and political news likely diverted attention away from the Emmys. On the bright side, Fox has reported their most-watched Monday since May 2022.
The 2023 Emmy Awards was delayed by four months due to the ongoing strikes by actors and writers. This contributed to the significant drop in TV ratings as it has amassed an average of 4.3 million viewers. The 27% decrease from 2022 Emmys, which had 5.92 million viewers on NBC is a trend as viewership is reaching a low for the fifth time in the past six years.
The
Emmys had also encountered competition within the Hollywood awards season as
they distributed trophies to winners who had already received recognition at
the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards the previous week. The overlap in
winners have contributed to the decreased anticipation for the Emmy Awards.
Amidst
the challenge, Fox, the broadcasting network for the Emmys, saw a silver lining
as the ceremony has contributed to their most-watched Monday night (excluding
sports) since May 2022. The broadcast has also generated positive reviews,
underscoring a genuine celebration of the content it aimed to honour.
