Streaming in Hong Kong

The global streaming landscape has undergone a seismic shift in recent years, transforming the way we consume media and entertainment. Streaming giants like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ have revolutionised the industry. Offering their library of shows that is accessible anytime, anywhere. These platforms have not only disrupted traditional cable and satellite television but also spurred a wave of innovation and competition to the streaming space. By: Wee Yan Ling

Hong Kong, is a city renowned for its thriving film and television industry. They are testament that the streaming revolution is not confined to Western shores. We take a closer look at the offerings by three prominent streaming services by Hong Kong – VIU, TVB Anywhere and myTV SUPER.  

PCCW’s Viu

Viu has been providing its viewers with premium, top-rated Korean, Japanese, mainland Chinese, Taiwanese, Thai series, variety shows and animations. Many of their offerings feature localised subtitles available as quickly as four hours after their original telecast. In addition, they have dedicated efforts to nurture their original production brand, ‘Viu Original’ where a range of popular Viu’s unique Korean dramas are released. 

The Multi-territory Asian streaming service operates in 16 Asian and Middle East markets and is a success story in regional streaming. The principal shareholder, PCCW, revealed profits early this year stating that they have $66.4 million monthly active users in 2022, an increase of 13% year-on-year. Paying subscribers also increased to $12.2 million, a whopping 45%.

TVB Anywhere

Introduced in 2016, TVB Anywhere is an online pay-TV and e-commerce platform originating from Television Broadcast Limited, a prominent television station in Hong Kong. With their primary focus on Chinese viewers, they deliver television content through its channels through their set-up boxes and mobile applications. 

myTV SUPER

myTV SUPER provides an extensive array of thematic channels and programs, ensuring a wealth of options for viewers. This includes a diverse range of content such as myTV SUPER originals, TVB’s in-house productions, Asian dramas, variety shows, movies, classic films, and a host of other highly popular and top-quality content spanning various genres and themes.

Their 3 features include Linear channel where they broadcast live TV channels, VOD which contains vast volumes and extensive choices of premier and classic programmes and time shift, which is a playback of contents broadcasted within three hours. 

International platforms

In addition to the homegrown services like Viu, Hong Kong also embraced international streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney+ and more. Netflix has more than a million subscribers across the Asia-Pacific region, notorious for their wide array of content and original productions. Having entered the Hong Kong market in 2021, Disney+ offers a treasure trove of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, National Geographic titles and many more. As the streaming landscape in Hong Kong continues to evolve, the streaming platforms are integral to the entertainment choices of viewers in the region.
