CNN Announces Layoffs and New Digital Strategy

The CNN newsroom, which has effectively been split into US television, international television and digital, will now be merged into one. By: K Dass.

US - CNN, the renowned news network, is undergoing significant changes as it pivots toward a billion-dollar digital business. CEO Mark Thompson recently revealed plans to reshape the organization, resulting in approximately 100 job losses.

Out of CNN’s 3,500-employee workforce, around 100 individuals will be impacted by the job cuts. Notably, media critic Brian Lowry and senior tech writer Samantha Murphy Kelly are among those laid off. Thompson emphasised that open positions were closed wherever possible, minimising the impact on currently occupied roles.

The “One Newsroom” Strategy

Thompson’s vision centers around merging linear and digital newsgathering into a cohesive unit. The U.S. newsgathering, international newsgathering, and global digital news will now operate as one organisation, led by Virginia Moseley. Domestic and international news desks will collaborate more closely, sharing resources for major breaking stories.

Digital Subscriptions

CNN.com is set to launch its first subscription product later this year. These offerings will feature “want to use” content anchored by lifestyle journalism. The goal? To build a robust $1 billion business. Additionally, CNN Originals and CNN en Español will debut on additional FAST Channels.

CNN’s transformation reflects the media landscape’s evolution, with a strategic focus on digital growth and streamlined operations. As the industry adapts, CNN aims to remain at the forefront of news delivery.
