Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing almost lost her chance to star in local filmmaker Chong Keat Aun’s upcoming movie Mother Bhumi as she was deemed “too pretty” for the role.
Malaysia - Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing
recently revealed that she almost lost the opportunity to star in the upcoming
Malaysian film “Mother Bhumi” because she was considered “too pretty”
for the role. At a press conference in Kuala Lumpur, Fan shared that director
Chong Keat Aun initially hesitated to cast her, fearing her striking looks
might overshadow the film’s gritty storyline.
Fan, a
dedicated admirer of Chong’s previous works, was determined to secure the role.
She urged Chong to treat her like “garbage” during their first meeting,
emphasizing her willingness to transform her appearance drastically for the
character. Fan’s commitment to authenticity saw her gaining 6kg and setting
aside her glamorous makeup for a more rugged look.
Set in 1990s
Kedah, “Mother Bhumi” tells the story of Hong Im, a farmer grappling
with the loss of her husband while raising their two children near the
Malaysia-Thailand border. The character uses her magic to assist villagers with
their daily problems and encounters a ghost who reveals a shocking secret about
her husband’s mysterious disappearance.
Fan’s
dedication to the role extended beyond physical transformation. She learned the
local Chinese accent and picked up Malay, Hokkien, Thai, and Pali languages to
deliver an impactful performance1. Her efforts paid off, as Chong now praises
her discipline and commitment. Despite initial reservations, Fan’s portrayal of
Hong Im is expected to bring depth and authenticity to the film.
“Mother
Bhumi” also stars Hong Kong actress Natalie Hsu, Taiwanese child actor Bai
Run Yin, and Malaysian actress Pearlly Chua. Fan’s willingness to embrace a
less glamorous appearance and her dedication to the role highlight her
versatility and commitment as an actress, ensuring that her performance will
resonate with audiences.
