The Americas region last achieved an Oscar nomination two years ago, and most recently won in 2019.
The 2025
Oscars International Feature race from the Americas showcases a diverse array
of films, with Brazil and Mexico leading the charge. Brazil’s entry, “I’m
Still Here,” directed by Walter Salles, is a poignant adaptation of Marcelo
Rubens Paiva’s memoir. The film, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival
and won the Golden Osella for Best Screenplay, tells the story of a family
navigating the turmoil of Brazil’s military dictatorship in the 1970s.
Mexico’s
contender, “Sujo,” directed by Astrid Rondero and Fernanda Valadez, is a
gripping narrative that has garnered significant attention on the festival
circuit. This film explores themes of identity and resilience, resonating
deeply with audiences.
Argentina’s “Kill
The Jockey,” directed by Luis Ortega, is another strong contender. This
crime drama, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, follows the story of
a gifted jockey entangled with a mobster. The film has already won the San
Sebastian Horizons Award.
These films,
along with other entries from the region, highlight the rich storytelling and
cinematic excellence of the Americas. With a mix of true-life dramas, crime
stories, and documentaries, the region is poised to make a significant impact
at the Oscars this year.
