Drew Barrymore’s Writers Refuse to Return

The American daytime talk show was set to return on October 16th, however the three WGA writers - Chelsea White, Cristina Kinon and Liz Koe. have declined to return to the show. By: Dylan Low

The Drew Barrymore Show is preparing to come back, despite their trio of WGA writers having decided not to return back to their former show.

Barrymore found herself in trouble when she broke news that her show will return for the fourth season debut, without the writers who were on strike. Fast forward a week, Barrymore had faced criticism followed by various guest cancellations. She hence revealed plans to pause the show’s return until the WGA strike was resolved.

However, even with the strike being over, her three writers: Chelsea White, Cristina Kinon and Liz Koe, have rejected the offer to return. The production is currently interviewing new writers and is in cooperation with the guild.

These three women shared the same title as co-head writer and have stayed with the series since season one. They were seen protesting outside of Drew’s Manhattan Studio on various occasions, holding up signs stating, “Honk if you [love] union labour” and “Drew’s News Strikes”.

The writers found out about the show’s return, not from Barrymore herself or from their colleagues, but audience ticket giveaways posted online on social media.

“It is a bummer to hear that the show is going back because it sends a message that union writers are not valuable,” White stated to the media that morning,

Kinon further commented, “I understand that everybody has to do what they feel is best for them. For me and the WGA writers on the show, it’s important for us to stick with our union. We deserve a fair contract, so we are here today outside.”

The Drew Barrymore Show will officially return to production on 16th October, debuting their fourth season without their three WGA writers.
