EPL Receives Court Order to Block 25 Illegal Sites in Singapore

As part of efforts to combat piracy, the English Premier League will block 25 of the most popular illegal streaming sites in Singapore, meaning over 460 relevant domains will have been successfully blocked in the city-state. By: Kritchanon Tan Kian Wei.

Singapore - The English Premier League (EPL) will force local internet service providers (ISPs) to block 25 of the most popular illegal football streaming sites in Singapore, following the receiving of a court order from the High Court to block such sites.

The EPL had previously summoned local telcos like M1, ViewQwest, Singtel and MyRepublic to court in February. The league also has a global anti-piracy, working with authorities in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Vietnam to stop the sharing of pirated content.

In a statement by the EPL, the league explained: “The technical method by which the ISPs are required to implement the blocks has been refined, making it harder for the operators of the pirated websites to circumvent them.”

Meanwhile, EPL general counsel Kevin Plumb said: “We will continue working with our broadcast partner StarHub, as well as local authorities and (ISPs), to block illegal streams and to make fans aware of the dangers associated with these websites.”

The EPL had previously commissioned a study which found that consumers have an average 48% chance of encountering a cyber threat on the top 25 illegal streaming websites in Singapore. Additionally, 53% of advertisements analysed on these illegal streaming sites were categorised as high-risk, with consumers 3.5 times more at risk of scams when visiting illegal sports streaming sites, compared with more mainstream sites in Singapore.

Following the most recent court order, the total number of such domains blocked in the city-state has risen to over 460.
