The Legacy of Kevin Turen
Visionary film and television producer Kevin Turen, who produced HBO blockbuster series Euphoria, has tragically passed away at the age of 44. As a figure that has put in passion and dedication to filmmaking, we look into the legacy that he has left behind. By: Dylan Low
Kevin Turen was known by many as a competent film and television producer, who shockingly made headlines when it was announced he unexpectedly passed away on November 12, at 44 years old. His sudden death left a gap in the entertainment industry, as many saw his potential as a creative, passionate and dedicated filmmaker.
In the span of his career, he has made a wide variety of film projects, showcasing his talent to create interesting concepts and drama in films. Currently, the cause of his death has remained undisclosed.
Start of a filmmaking career
Before being acknowledged as the producer behind trend-setting success drama Euphoria, it was humble beginnings for Turen. He was born in New York City in 1979, he already obtained interest in filmmaking at a young age.
He hence pursued his passion by studying English and Critical Film Studies at Columbia University, eventually obtaining a degree in film studies. Following graduation, he started his career in the entertainment industry where he first worked at First Look Studios.
Starting as a creative executive, he quickly rose the ranks to become president of production while expanding the company. In his tenure at First Look, he has distributed films namely The Proposition, The Dead Girl and An American Crime. Turen had moved on to work at Infinity Media and Treehouse Pictures, and was also signed to be president of production at Phantom Four.
It was the year 2018 when he co-founded the brand Little Lamb Productions, alongside Sam Levinson and Ashley Levinson. Together, they created the worldwide sensational series Euphoria, which garnered the attention of many international audiences. It featured popular celebrity actress Zendaya, which the extensive success of the film earned her two Emmy awards.
His other acclaimed filmworks include another HBO series The Idol, feature film Pieces of a Woman, and A24 drama Waves.
Relationship with family
Turen married his wife Evelina back in 2012, who is a notable actress known for starring roles in That Awkward Moment, The Box, and Arbitrage. He also unfortunately leaves behind two young children, his sons Jack and James Turen.
Jay Penske, his close friend and CEO of Penske Media Corporation, mentioned about Turen’s relationship with his family, “Despite his many achievements in Hollywood, Kevin’s greatest passion was his family and friends. He was so proud of his children. He and his wife, Evelina, were resolved that their children grow up with great values and ensured they make a difference in the broader world.”
Love from the entertainment industry
Despite Turen’s early passing, his legacy is not forgotten by the people. Many have shown appreciation to him on social media, with messages such as, “Thank you Kevin Turen for all the joy and love and great creative entertainment you have brought to this world. You will be forever missed and never forgotten,” Another user commented, “I’m devastated, and in shock, a genius when it comes to film and creativity. He inspired me so much. Always smiling and kind.”
