Edward Berger is a filmmaker who wants to do something different from what [he has] done before. This quest led him to Macau this year to shoot his upcoming Netflix film The Ballad of a Small Player.
Oscar-winning
director Edward Berger recently discussed his experience shooting the Netflix
film The Ballad of a Small Player in Macau. The film, based on Lawrence
Osborne’s 2014 novel, stars Colin Farrell and Tilda Swinton. Berger was drawn
to Macau for its unique blend of Eastern and Western influences, which he felt
would enhance the film’s visual appeal.
Berger
highlighted Macau’s diverse architecture, from Portuguese colonial houses to
modern high-rises, as a significant factor in his decision. He aimed to
showcase the city’s true essence, often overlooked by global audiences. The
film was shot in various locations, including the iconic casinos and vibrant
neighbourhoods, capturing the city’s pulsating nightlife.
Working in
Macau allowed Berger to collaborate with talented local professionals, whose
creativity and work ethic he praised1. This project marks a departure from his
previous works, offering a fresh perspective and new challenges. Despite the
success of his previous film, All Quiet on the Western Front, Berger
approached this project with the same dedication and passion.
The Ballad
of a Small Player
promises to be a visually stunning film that brings Macau’s rich culture and
dynamic environment to the forefront.
