Dubbing plays a vital role in bridging language barriers from blockbusters to TV series. Automated translation and similar technologies today are impacting almost every aspect of content localisation and video in particular.
Localisation of content and video translation into many languages help increase the chances of attracting potential customers from different countries. In the context of business development and scaling, videos have become an important marketing tool. Therefore, the demand for video translation and dubbing will likely continue to grow in the coming years.
In an era of global connectivity and diverse entertainment consumption, the dubbing industry has emerged as a vital component in the dissemination of international content. With the demand of widespread blockbusters and TV series globally, dubbing battle against language barriers and connect audiences with their favourite stars no matter the distance.
The process of dubbing includes gathering source materials, translating scripts, casting voice actors, recording the dialogue and mixing the audio. Additionally, scriptwriting is needed for the translated dialogue to flow naturally and talent casting is crucial for the delivery of the script. The people involved in these processes include but are not limited to - filmmakers, performers, sound engineers and voice artists.
Actor, and Netflix-credited voice artist Edward Hong explains the way to get into the dubbing scene as needing to get into the voiceover world in general. He added, “For starters, you would need a solid animation/video game VO reel which can be created by professional voiceover facilities throughout major metropolitan cities, especially Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Vancouver and pretty much any major city that is a friend to acting work in general.”
Dubbed shows for different regions include 'Spy x Family' (2022), 'Money Heist' (2021), 'Kathal' (2023), 'FUBAR' (2023) and many more. Technology serves as an essential aid towards the dubbing industry, supporting it through tools like Automatic Dialogue Replacement (ADR), voice matching, real-time translation systems and cloud-based collaboration.
Artificial intelligence (AI), automated translation and similar technologies today are impacting almost every aspect of content localisation and video in particular. The ADR technology allows for synchronisation of dubbed dialogue with on-screen lip movements. With this, voice actors can easily match their performances with precision to the timing and visual cues of the original actors, resulting in a more seamless and natural dubbing experience.
Voice matching is the use of manipulation software to amend voices and achieve better matches with the original actors. This ensures consistency in character voices throughout a series or franchise despite the use of external voice actors for dubbing.
Real-time translation systems are currently in the early stages of development with the help of speech recognition and machine translation. These systems have the massive potential to automatically translate and dub content on the fly, reducing the time and resources required for traditional dubbing processes.
Finally, cloud-based sharing and project management tools have simplified collaboration between different stakeholders involved in the dubbing process. Translators, voice actors, directors, and engineers can work together seamlessly, sharing files, feedback, and updates remotely, regardless of location.
While technology has undoubtedly enhanced the dubbing industry, it's important to appreciate the human element in the process of dubbing. Skilled translators, talented voice actors, and experienced directors continue to play vital roles in ensuring the artistic and linguistic integrity of the dubbed content, while technology serves as a helping hand to support and streamline their efforts.
