Wong Ching-po’s classic folk tale of redemption takes a dark and twisted turn as the story of Gui-lin unfolds. The well constructed tapestry of comedy woven with visceral thrills offers a unique take on the gangster genre. This must be the testament to why it was nominated for seven awards at the upcoming Golden Horse Awards 2023.
Gui-lin is an assassin with immaculate skills, however his world took a drastic turn when he was diagnosed with cancer. With his life due soon, he sets off for an adventure in hopes of leaving an indelible mark on the world. He strives for his goal by eradicating the nation’s worst criminals. The police and Taiwanese gangsters are in hot pursuit, adding an adrenaline rush and suspense to the story.
The film’s forte is in its absurdity as it helps to enhance the experience and soften the violence. Beyond the simple minded and happy-go-lucky personality, Gui-lin possesses a conscience that intrigues the viewers to crave more about him and his story.
Wong Ching-po successfully exudes his forte in the film through the tantalising and blood-inducing action scenes which helps add flavour. The film is distinct from other action films in the aspect that it does not rely solely on the action sequences, but also the intricate complexities and depths conveyed through the plot twists and symbolism encompassing the theme of redemption and rebirth.
The Pig, The Snake, and The Pigeon has successfully weaved a tapestry of intensity, hilarity as well as thought-provoking themes, making viewers stay on the edge of their seats for the unique take on the crime genre film.
