Description
Centred around main character Mario, he and his brother Luigi are Brooklyn plumbers who work underground fixing water mains. Things take an unexpected turn when they are inexplicably transported to the Mushroom Kingdom. Following their separation, Mario embarks on a journey to find him with the assistance of Princess Peach and Toad. They also team up on an adventure to prevent Bowser’s plans for world dominion, which involves taking over the kingdom and marrying Princess Peach.
The film consists of plenty of fan-service through a compilation of references from the beginning. Some of these Nintendo easter eggs can be seen in the background, such as an early shot of Mario and Luigi racing through the city in a side-scrolling format – mimicking the earlier Mario games. There is a reference to the Super Mario Odyssey game on a bookshelf in Mario’s room, indicating that a hero’s journey is about to unfold and linking to the iconic Switch game. The film will provide nostalgia for long-time Nintendo and Mario fans, with the adorable Lumalee also making an appearance from the Mario Galaxy game.
What makes this iconic franchise film stand out is the incredible voice acting. With many famous actors like Jack Black, Chris Pratt, Charlie Day and Anya Taylor-Joy included in this instalment, their voices featured in the film highlights the dramatic interactions amongst the characters, that helps to keep the audience entertained.
Overall, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has accomplished an amazing job as an excellent animation film. With brilliantly designed characters, vibrant sceneries and smooth animation production, viewers will certainly enjoy the visuals this film has in store. It is a film that audiences of all ages can enjoy, as adults relish in the references of their childhood Mario games, and the kids will be entertained by the stunning animated graphics.
