importance of perseverance and “nothing is impossible when you’re fueled from
within”, according to the film synopsis.
Gran
Turismo details the unbelievable true story about +a group of
unlikely underdogs, featuring a struggling working-class gamer (Archie
Madekwe), an unsuccessful ex-race car driver (David Harbour), and an idealistic
motorsport executive (Orlando Bloom). As a team, they take risks to join race
car driving – one of the most elite sports in the world.
Other
than the thrill of sports car-racing, the film is centred around the importance
of chasing one’s passion and dreams. The relationship between Jann and his
family is relatable to audiences, as his parents were trying to keep him safe
from the dangers of racing (telling him to find a real job and career), yet in
the end allowing him to pursue his dreams for it anyway.
The
character cast was exceptional as well. Geri Halliwell Horner and Djimon
Hounsou outstandingly portrayed their role as Jann’s parents, showcasing
tenderness and vulnerability when reacting to their son’s decision to do car
racing. With true emotions shown on screen, it surely tugs on the heartstrings
of viewers watching the film.
Archie
Madekwe was also exceptional as Jann Mardenborough, having to play various
duties as brother, son, friend, gamer, and racer with incredible depth, which
he showcased even in this fast-paced film.
Overall, Gran
Turismo has excelled in being a genuinely inspirational film with
real-life takeaways and moral lessons. Compared to other action films
(showcases good/bad characters, violence and victory after winning), it has
an original approach in showing Jann’s racing journey to audiences, including
values to be learnt throughout racing and sports experiences, as well as
aspirations to chase one’s dreams.
