A Guilty Conscience, the highest-grossing Hong Kong film of all time, took home the Best Picture award, though that is the only award the title won during the show. Director Soi Cheang also picked up the Best Director award for the mystery thriller Mad Fate, which sees a fortune teller who meets and tries to change the fate of a young man with a strong desire to commit murder.

Meanwhile, The Goldfinger starring Tony Leung and Andy Lau picked up six awards after receiving 12 nominations. Leung received his sixth Best Actor award for his role in the 2023 blockbuster, while the crime thriller also picked up awards for Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Costume and Makeup Design, Best Sound Design and Best Visual Effects. Based on a true story, the film depicts the quick rise and fall of the Hong Kong corporation Carrian Group due to a corruption scandal.

The crime drama In Broad Daylight also won big at the awards, winning three awards after receiving 16 nominations, with Jennifer Yu taking home the title of Best Actress, while co-stars Rachel Leung and David Chiang received the Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor award respectively. The film sees an undercover journalist investigating a case of suspected abuse in a nursing home.

Held on 14 April 2024, the 42nd Hong Kong Film Awards was presented by the Hong Kong Film Awards Association and took place at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui.
