Top Korean Variety Show Producers Attend Taiwan’s Master Lecture Series

Highly acclaimed Korean variety show producers attend Taiwan’s master lecture series, a part of the 2024 LEAP Co-Development Programme on Variety Show. By Ching Wai.

Taiwan - A master lecture series took place in Taipei from 10 to 12 April, marking the beginning of the 2024 LEAP Co-Development Programme on Variety Show’s first phase. The programme is jointly organised by the Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA), AR Asia Production, and South Korea’s Something Special.

Fifty teams from television stations, production companies, and multimedia creators were in attendance, including TVBS, GTV, Sanlih SET, TTV, and Mirror Media. Director of box office hit More than Blue Gavin Lin and general manager of Transworld Television Production Company Tracy Chiu were also present.

Popular and highly acclaimed Korean variety show producers participated in discussions and shared their experiences of success and failure with sincerity and candidness. This created a comfortable atmosphere for enthusiastic and ultimately beneficial and insightful interactions between Taiwanese and Korean variety show creators.

Junghee Jang shared production secrets of the music programme I Can See Your Voice during the session “How to create a HIT Music show”. The highly successful programme ran for 9 seasons and was licensed for adaptation in 25 regions. Widely acclaimed programme Running Man producer Kim Miyeon also gave tips, including creating vivid and lively “characters”. Ko Mingoo mentioned during the theme of “How to work with Global Streamer” the benefits of budget and scale support and other challenges when collaborating with international platforms.

Attendees like Taiwan’s leading producer of reality shows Huang Hsiao Mei and entertainer Christopher Downs hope to incorporate insights from the course into their shows to create suitable content for an international audience. Insights relate to character design, production objectives, entertainment value, and striking a balance between commercial and meaning.

The event’s second phase will be in June 2024 when eight groups will collaborate with Korean producers on programme development. Participants will showcase their finished formats at the Asia TV Forum & Market (ATF) in Singapore in December this year.
