Kung Fu Panda 4 Smashes Box Office Against The Odds

Despite being the lowest-grossing film of the franchise and receiving low ratings, Kung Fu Panda 4 surpasses US$300 million internationally, achieving an overall worldwide gross of over US$480 million. By Ching Wai.

World - Kung Fu Panda 4 has grossed over US$480 million worldwide as of the time of writing, with over US$179 million from the domestic box office and over US$300 million from the international box office. This comes in spite of the 2024 animated film being released digitally as well as having low-rating reviews.

The film achieved this box office milestone in over a month of its release. Its theatrical success is an impressive feat as it continues to gain box office revenue even after having been released on digital platforms on 9 April.

The results are even more impressive as the film has had its fair share of bad reviews. Kung Fu Panda 4 received a Tomatometer of 72%, the lowest critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes out of all the movies in the Kung Fu Panda franchise. However, the film received the highest audience score of the movie franchise, with 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. Analysts conclude this might be due to the seven-year wait for the fourth movie after the third one, making nostalgia work in the film’s favour to draw a large returning crowd.

While its performance is subpar when compared within its own franchise, Kung Fu Panda 4 has indeed achieved success in the overall box office from the nostalgic audience who are curious to see what the film has to offer, and who are keen to experience it in theatres.

The film was originally released on 8 March 2024. The cast includes Jack Black, Awkwafina, Viola Davis, James Hong, Ke Huy Quan, Bryan Cranston, and Dustin Hoffman.
