Greater Heights for BBC Platforms

BBC Bitesize has been given a significant sum of investments, while BBC Nordic and BBC Nordic+ will continue its content expansion amidst growth. By Ching Wai.

Europe, Nordic Region - BBC Children’s and Education has made a £6 million (US$7.4 million) investment into BBC Bitesize, its online education platform. At the same time, BBC Nordic, the Nordic enhanced linear channel that replaced BBC Brit and BBC Earth in the Nordic region, has grown tremendously in its first year.

As BBC marks its 100th year since its first education broadcast, 25 years of BBC Bitesize, and one year of BBC Nordic, the U.K. public service broadcaster has much to celebrate about and look forward to.

The £6 million (US$7.4 million) investment placed into BBC Bitesize will be used to enhance content discovery, recommendation systems and self-curation features to make the online education platform more personalised, relevant and easier to find. BBC Bitesize is used by almost half of all secondary school students in the U.K. to help with the school curriculum.

Patricia Hidalgo, BBC’s director of Children’s and Education, said, “... we are so proud of the innovation we have pioneered as we have helped the nation to learn. We’re continuing this rich heritage as we evolve BBC Bitesize for the next generation of young learners investing in technology to deliver personalised content supported by the educational rigour and trust we have earned over this centenary.”

BBC Nordic’s ratings grew by 86% over the past six months. The channel was the top in its competitive set for three consecutive months this past year, and has reached a 1% audience share since its launch in April 2023. New titles are set to premiere in May on BBC Nordic and BBC Nordic+, the sister on-demand streaming service.

“... The rapid growth we have seen since October correlates with our new programming strategy and is a testament to the high-quality, broad content we have on offer. …With impressive growth and an audience share of 1% in the past 6 months, I’m confident in the future and can’t wait to see what the next year will bring,” said Arran Tindall, chief commercial officer at BBC Studios.
