Social Media Platform X to have its own Smart TV app

Elon Musk’s social media platform X will be launching its own smart TV app, which will work similar to YouTube or Netflix. By Ching Wai.

US - Elon Musk’s social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, will be launching its own smart TV app. Features include a trending video algorithm, AI-powered technology as well as cross-device compatibility that will allow users to watch content simultaneously on multiple devices.

@XData tweeted, “In the last month, people on X have spent a lot of time watching video[s] – to the tune of 385 million hours! That’s 1.4 trillion seconds, 23 billion minutes, or 16 million days’ worth of video. Let’s watch what happens when you can stream the world in real-time on X TV!”

The company also posted a preview of the app’s features, showing videos of Tucker Carlson’s interview with Russian President Vladimir Putin and footage of a SpaceX rocket taking off.

Company officials have confirmed that there will be no advertisements for the initial launch of the app, but plans to possibly introduce them to generate revenue are in place for when the consumer base grows.

On top of allowing users to create and upload their own videos, the upcoming app will reportedly offer third-party content. This comes with reports of a deal between X and Range Media Partners for ready third-party content, and gives the possibility of X striking more of such deals to expand its offering in the future.

Video was emphasised to be the focus of X’s future development. The company claimed in January that it is a “video-first platform” with videos dominating 8 out of 10 users sessions, and the “immersive video” feature allegedly having 100 million daily users.

With the launch, the social media platform will be able to rival video streaming app providers like Netflix or YouTube, the app for which is compatible with Amazon devices and Samsung Smart TVs. X had previously launched video streaming and smart TV apps, which have been discontinued.
