All Eyes on Taiwan at Cannes

There’s more international attention paid to Taiwan these days, and we’re seeing more Taiwanese projects at international festivals and pitch forums.

Cannes - At the Cannes Film Market, Taiwanese sellers are introducing an exciting lineup of projects. Romantic dramas, a horror comedy and the first Taiwan-India co-production are being introduced by Taiwanese sellers at the market.

Balloon’s Landing: Directed by Angel I-Han Teng, this road movie stars Hong Kong’s Terrance Lau and Taiwan’s Fandy Fan. It follows a Hong Kong writer and a local thug on a journey to search for the mysterious Bay of the Vanishing Whales.

Notably, Director Teng’s LGBTQ+ drama series, Fragrance Of The First Flower, was the first Taiwanese title to screen at France’s Series Mania and won several prizes at Taiwan’s Golden Bell Awards.

Demon Hunters: This supernatural action comedy is co-produced between Taiwan and India. Indian actor Arjan Bajwa and Taiwan’s JC Lin and Regina Lei headline the story.

It revolves around a YouTuber who faces a major challenge when he has to save his partner from a zombie demon, seeking help from an Indian computer geek. Filmed in Taiwan, it’s produced by Cindy Shyu of Taiwan’s Light House Productions.

Hunter Brothers: Directed by Su Hung-En, this suspense thriller features Indigenous actors Ma Chih-Hsiang, Lin Ching-Tai, and Hsu Yi-Fan.

The story follows an Indigenous man seeking revenge on his older brother after being released from jail for killing their father. The film won Taiwan’s Excellent Screenplay Award and marks Su’s narrative feature debut.

I Am The Secret In Your Heart: A college romance drama starring Moon Lee, Tsao Yu-Ning, and rapper Shou Lou.

The plot revolves around a high-school girl, her childhood friend, and a new student who steals her heart. Backed by Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA), Rose International Entertainment, and Man Man Er.

Intimate Encounter (work-in-progress): Directed by Chang Tso-chi, this drama focuses on a man recovering from a heart transplant during the pandemic. He moves back in with his grandfather and faces new challenges in life.

The film will be presented at the HAF Goes To Cannes screening program.

These projects showcase Taiwan’s diverse talent and creativity on the international stage.
