US - Netflix has just published the second edition of its
engagement report, covering the period between July and December 2023. According
to “What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report”, audiences watched 90 billion
hours of content in the 6-month period, with 183 billion hours of watch time
for the whole year. The top movie title for the period was the apocalyptic
film, Leave The World Behind, racking up over 121 million views and 286
million hours watched.
The film, an
apocalyptic drama starring Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke and Kevin
Bacon, was produced by Higher Ground Productions, the company founded by former
US president Barack Obama and his wife Michelle.
The report covers 99%
of all viewing on Netflix during this period. Netflix has added runtime and
views (total hours viewed divided by runtime) to its report. This mirrors the
weekly Top 10 and Most Popular lists.
The first three parts
of Lupin generated nearly 100 million views in the second half of 2023. Across
its eight seasons, Cocomelon received nearly 200 million views.
Other popular titles
included The Witcher (76 million views), Virgin River (69 million
views), The Crown (50 million views), Sweet Magnolias (35 million
views), Top Boy (26 million views), Heartstopper (24 million
views), Sintonia (20 million views), and Sweet Home (17 million
views).
Meanwhile, Netflix’s
top TV series was the first season of One Piece, which garnered over 71
million views and 546 million hours watched.
Eiichiro Oda created
the original manga upon which both the One Piece anime and new Netflix
series were based. The series follows a rag-tag pirate crew in pursuit of a
lost treasure. Last year, the show broke records set by Wednesday and Stranger
Things.
