U2 Doc Kiss The Future to Open Sarajevo Film Festival 2023
The 29th Sarajevo Film Festival will be kicking off with Kiss The Future, a documentary that follows how the rock band U2 came to play a concert in Sarajevo in the week of the Bosnian War. By: Yan Yun
The documentary, directed by Nenad Cicin-Sain, is set to be screened as part of the festival’s Open Air Programme in August. It previously premiered at the Berlinale in February.
The film delves into the story of a US aid worker in war-torn Sarajevo who sought the assistance of U2 to bring attention to the Bosnian War.
Produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck for Pearl Street Films and Sarah Anthony for Good Wolves Productions, the documentary received funding from Fifth Season, which also handles international sales.
Cicin-Sain, a Slovak filmmaker based in the US, co-wrote the film with Bill Carter, the US aid worker who, in the early 1990s, reached out to U2 in an effort to raise global awareness of the conflict in Bosnia. U2 agreed to help and conducted live satellite interviews with local Sarajevans during their 1993 concert. After these interviews, the band promised to perform in the city once the conflict came to an end.
Alongside the likes of Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, Bill Clinton, and Christiane Amanpour, the documentary also features Mirsad Purivatra, the founder of Sarajevo Film Festival during the conflict in 1995. Purivatra stepped down from festival director last year after holding the position for 17 years.
The festival announced its competition programme last week, with Australian actress Mia Wasikowska set to head the feature film jury.
