TVE Rejects Mediapro’s LaLiga Proposal

Proposal Spain’s public broadcaster has told Mediapro that it won’t be paying for coverage of top flight football next season.

Spain - Spain’s public broadcaster, TVE, has made a significant decision that it won’t be paying for coverage of top-flight football next season. The rejection comes after four months of negotiations with Mediapro, the rights holder.

El Confidencial Digital reports that TVE had concerns about several aspects of the proposed contract. These included the number of conditions attached to the deal and potential scheduling conflicts with Friday night matches and regular cultural programming.

The package under discussion was similar to what Gol TV currently broadcasts, with restrictions that excluded Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Atlético de Madrid, and Valencia CF. Additionally, any team competing in Europe would only be covered after being knocked out of the competition. The budget allocated for the 38 league games was €3.8 million, roughly €100,000 per match.

This decision marks a significant shift in LaLiga coverage, and it remains to be seen how it will impact football fans and the broadcasting landscape in Spain.
