The filmmaker behind ‘Tokyo Swindlers’ will make features and series for the streamer.
Japan - Japanese director Hitoshi One,
renowned for his work on the hit Netflix series Tokyo Swindlers, has
signed an exclusive five-year deal with the streaming giant. This partnership
will see Netflix producing and distributing all of One’s upcoming series and
films, marking a significant expansion of their collaboration.
Tokyo Swindlers, which
debuted in July 2024, quickly became an international sensation, landing in
Netflix’s global top 10 list for non-English TV shows for five consecutive
weeks. In Japan, it held the number one spot for all TV series for six weeks.
This success prompted Netflix to secure a long-term agreement with One, who has
been praised for his unique storytelling and creative vision.
Hitoshi One’s career began with the film adaptation of
the manga Moteki in 2011, which earned him the Most Popular Title
award at the 35th Japan Academy Awards. His other notable works include the
coming-of-age comedy Bakuman and the drama series Elpis: Hope or
Disaster, which won the grand prize at Japan’s 60th Galaxy Awards.
Expressing his excitement about the deal, One
highlighted the creative freedom and support he experienced while working with
Netflix on Tokyo Swindlers. He looks forward to exploring new projects
and pushing the boundaries of storytelling through this exclusive partnership.
