Busan, Korea - At the 29th Busan International Film Festival, The Land Of Morning Calm and MA – Cry Of Silence emerged as the standout winners of the prestigious New Currents Awards.

The Land Of Morning Calm, directed by Park Ri-woong, delves into the mysterious disappearance of a young fisherman and the involvement of an enigmatic old captain. Set against the backdrop of a rural coastal community, the film masterfully explores themes of economic uncertainty, loss, xenophobia, and societal prejudice. The jury praised Park’s precise and deliberate pacing, which effectively navigates these complex themes without faltering. This film not only captivated the jury but also won the KB New Currents Audience Award and the Netpac Award, highlighting its broad appeal and critical acclaim.

MA – Cry Of Silence, directed by The Maw Naing, tells the poignant story of a teenage textile worker in Myanmar, struggling to find her voice amidst political unrest. This Myanmar-Korea-Singapore-France-Norway-Qatar co-production was lauded for its courageous portrayal of resistance against historical and ongoing political challenges under Myanmar’s junta. The film’s powerful narrative and emotional depth resonated strongly with the jury, earning it the New Currents Award alongside The Land Of Morning Calm.
