Disney’s Inside Out 2 is the most successful release of 2024 to date.
German - Germany’s box office
experienced a significant decline in the first nine months of 2024, with
revenues falling by 16% year-on-year to €559 million, according to provisional
figures from Comscore. This downturn is attributed to a decrease in cinema
attendance, with around 57 million tickets sold, marking a 14.5% drop compared
to the same period in 2023.
Despite the overall decline, Disney emerged as the
market leader, generating €117 million in box office revenue and selling 11.85
million tickets. The success of Inside Out 2, which grossed over €51
million and attracted 5 million admissions, played a crucial role in Disney’s
dominance1. Other notable performers included Warner Bros’ Dune: Part Two
and Universal’s Despicable Me 4, which grossed €38 million and €38.2
million, respectively.
Local productions also made a mark, with Constantin
Film’s comedy Chantal In Fairyland becoming the most successful German
release, grossing €27.4 million. Leonine’s School of Magical Animals 3
followed closely, grossing €10.2 million and surpassing the one million
admissions mark.
The decline in box office revenue highlights the
challenges faced by the German film industry in 2024, as it struggles to
attract audiences back to cinemas amid a competitive entertainment landscape.
