Upcoming Japanese Anime Phoenix: Eden17 Drops Trailer
After seven years in the making, the release of new key art and the first-look trailer offer fans a tantalising glimpse into this highly anticipated anime series Phoenix: Eden17. By: Theng Min Yee
SINGAPORE – Fans eagerly awaiting the exclusive Disney+ debut of the Japanese anime series Phoenix: Eden17, were treated to an exciting preview today. The sneak peek included the release of new key art and a first-look trailer, providing a glimpse into the upcoming extraterrestrial adventure.
Phoenix: Eden17 draws its inspiration from the renowned work of Osamu Tezuka, often hailed as the "God of Manga." The series embarks on a journey with Romi and her partner George as they flee Earth in search of a fresh start on Eden17. The promise of a utopia-like future lures them, but their dreams are shattered upon arrival, as they find themselves in a barren frontier that cannot sustain human life. Stranded with no means to return home, and with Romi discovering she is pregnant, the couple must muster their survival skills, sourcing water and cultivating fields. Tragedy strikes when George is fatally injured in an accident. Left alone with her child Cain, Romi makes a heartfelt promise to her son – she will enter a hibernation pod and wake up in 13 years to ensure he is not alone forever. However, a malfunction in the system results in Romi awakening on Eden17 1,300 years later. Determined to return to Earth, Romi embarks on a seemingly impossible quest, as most believe Earth no longer exists.
The talented cast includes the voices of Rie Miyazawa as Romi, Yosuke Kubozuka as George, Honoka Yoshida as Com, Shintaro Asanuma as Makimura, Ryohei Kimura as the older voice of Cain, and Issey Oagata as Zudarban, a space merchant.
Directed by Shojiro Nishimi and produced by STUDIO4℃, the series boasts character design by chief animation director Tatsuzou Nishita and art direction by Shinji Kimura. The music score is composed by renowned composer Takatsugu Muramatsu.
Speaking about his role in the series, Shintaro Asanuma expressed his excitement: "I was 11 years old the first time I encountered the Phoenix story. I started reading the original manga and was overwhelmed by its magnificent scale. Now, 36 years later, I'm excited to be involved with Osamu Tezuka's work and to be able to stream it all over the world. I can't believe that I am working with such an incredible cast. As a fan, I'm also really looking forward to the first animated version of Phoenix: Nostalgia."
