The Nun II shook the UK box office with its debut in theatres, raking in £1.7 million across 572 locations, with an average of £3,048 per site. While this marks a solid opening, it falls short of the 2018 predecessor's weekend earnings of £3.4 million. Director Michael Chaves took the reins from Corin Hardy, and Taissa Farmiga reprises her role as Sister Irene in this spin-off from The Conjuring, where she confronts the demon that nearly claimed her life four years prior.
In a remarkable feat for Yash Raj Films, Aran ‘Atlee’ Kumar’s Hindi-language action thriller Jawan, starring Shah Rukh Khan, stormed the box office, amassing £1 million (£1.04 million) from 261 UK and Ireland locations, boasting an impressive site average of £3,984. Including previews, Jawan totalled £1.3 million, securing its position as the second highest-grossing opening weekend for an Indian film in the region, only trailing behind Pathaan, which garnered £1.4 million in January, and surpassing Dhoom 3, which earned £884,567 in 2013.
Last week's top contender, The Equalizer 3, maintained its strong showing, adding £1 million (£1.02 million) to its Sony-backed earnings, bringing its total to an impressive £4.7 million.
Warner Bros' Barbie continued to captivate audiences, generating an additional £560,378 in its eighth weekend, accumulating a commendable £93.8 million overall. The studio anticipates a surge in interest later this month with the limited release of Greta Gerwig’s title at Imax cinemas across the UK and Ireland, starting September 22.
Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer remains Universal's standout performer, despite a 50% drop from the previous weekend. The epic production added £482,121 to its total on its eighth weekend, now standing at an impressive £56.4 million.
Nia Vardalos' My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, directed by and starring herself, made its debut with a respectable £410,983 from 585 sites, averaging £703.
Celine Song's Sundance hit and directorial debut, Past Lives, delivered a strong opening, garnering £359,973 from 216 locations for Studiocanal. The poignant love story follows the journey of two childhood friends from South Korea who reconnect throughout their lives. Including previews, it has grossed £513,468 in total.
