Netflix, Max, Disney and ViX are members of the newly-formed Streaming Innovation Alliance Trade Association

Among the streamers to have recently joined the alliance are Netflix, Warner Bros Discovery, Disney, and Paramount Global in order to get its interests and concerns on the radar of US policy makers. By Wee Yan Ling.

Streaming Innovation Alliance (SIA), aims to be a “united voice” of the streaming community and said it will “fight for smart policies that will continue to meet audiences where they are and propel streaming innovation forward.”

The senior advisors of SIA encompass Mignon Clyburn, a former Federal Communications Commision commissioner from 2009 to 2018 and Fred Upton, a Republican who formerly chaired the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

The chairman of the Motion Picture Association, Charles Rivkin has played a monumental role in assembling the group with reference to the SIA.

Other members of the group are AfroLandTV, BET+, Discovery+, For Us By Us Network, the Motion Picture Association, MotorTrend+, Peacock, PlutoTV, Telemundo, TelevisaUnivision (ViX) and Vault. Amazon, Apple, and Google, the tech industry titans, are notably absent from the roster of members in the lobby group.

The birth of the group arises from the apprehensions that the U.S. regulators could potentially consider implementing rules, taxes and regulations that could subject the streaming industry to treatment akin to that of cable television. Furthermore, Nextstar and Sinclair have requested for the implementation of regulations compelling certain streaming services to include local broadcasting stations. Streaming services contend that the regulations lack logical coherence when considering their business models and operational frameworks.
