Michael Gambon Passes Away at 82

Known for his role as Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter franchise, Michael Gambon has died, in a statement reported by his family. By: Dylan Low

“We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon,” reported by publicist Clair Dobbs, on behalf of Gambon’s wife Anne and son Fergus. It was also stated that he had “died peacefully in hospital” after he dealt with a bout of pneumonia with his family at his bedside.

Michael Gambon started his accomplished acting career with theater performances, making his debut in a production of Othello, at the capital of Ireland, Gates Theatre in 1962. He then rose to fame in the UK. following his role of a French detective in ITV Programme Maigret and as Philip Marlow in screenwriter Dennis Potter’s The Singing Detective. He also acted in BBC’s 2015 TV series The Casual Vacancy and continued performing in theatre. He acted in Alan Ayckbourn’s The Norman Conquests and Henry IV, part of National Theatre Productions by Nicolas Hytner.

What gave him worldwide recognition was his performances as Albus Dumbledore in the iconic Harry Potter films, starting in 1997 where he featured in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. This was followed up by Gambon being knighted for his contributions in the entertainment industry, in 1998.

In his long career, Gambon has achieved many awards and accomplishments. He has won multiple Best Actor awards at the British Academy Television Awards (BAFTA) and been nominated for two Emmy awards.

Tributes were paid to the late Michael Gambon after news of his passing broke out.

"I'm so sad to hear that Michael Gambon has died," former Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson mentioned on social media. He heaped praise on Gambon, saying, "He was hugely amusing, and such a tremendous guest, we even named a corner after him."
