40 Years of Japanese Film Festival in Singapore
The Japanese Film Festival in Singapore, having been established in 1983, stands as one of the longest-running national film festivals in the country, serving as a captivating entry point for numerous individuals to explore the enchanting realms of Japanese cinema and culture. By: Wee Yan Ling
2023 marks the 40th anniversary of the Japanese Film Festival (JFF). In commemoration, this year’s JFF will be the longest-running yet with the greatest number of programmes since its first launch in 1983.
This year’s edition hosts more than 27 titles and more to come, with all new contemporary hits, indie curation of contemporary films and must-see retrospectives. The festival’s venues include Shaw Theatres Lido, Oldham Theatre, The Projector, Our Tampines Hub, and more. Tickets and additional information can be viewed here https://jff.sg.
Japan Creative Centre (JCC), Embassy of Japan in Singapore and the Japan Foundation (JF) are collaborating with Singapore Film Society (SFS) this year. The event is taking place from October to 20 December 2023.
JFF is also announcing its first ever Short Film Competition, sponsored by Pokka Singapore and inspired by the Power of a Pause campaign. The aim is to remind people to take a pause from our busy schedules for our mental wellness and health.
Drawing inspiration from two core elements, Patchworks and Flowers. Representing Japan is the sakura flower whereas orchid flowers for Singapore. This symbolises the common ground in each country to appreciate the multifaceted cultural exchange in art, literature, cuisines, traditions and cinema. Subtle film related motifs, such as projections and film rolls are creatively interwoven into the design, taking reference from Japanese sashiko techniques.
