Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, heads for Golden Globes
Lionsgate has decided to submit their adaptation of Judy Blume’s novel Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, for the Golden Globes as part of the comedy/musical categories. With an increase from five to six nominees, the movie is up against popular films like Warner Bros’ Barbie, Searchlight Pictures’ Poor Things and Focus Features’ The Holdovers. By: Dylan Low
Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret details the experience of 11-year-old Margaret as she transitions to the new life of New Jersey from New York, where she deals with making new friends and a new school. It is written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig.
This coming-of-age drama and comedy film consists of multiple Oscar winners and contenders from their cast, namely Rachel McAdams, who has been nominated for her picture film winner The Spotlight. Featuring her young co-star Abby Ryder Fortson, she plays Margaret, the sole lead of the movie.
Other prominent names in the film consist of Kathy Bates as Margaret’s grandmother, alongside Producer James L.Brooks, composer Hans Zimmer and costume designer Ann Roth.
Craig had previously been nominated for DGA’s Awards’ inaugural director accolade for The Edge of Seventeen, which earned a Golden Globe nomination for the lead actress Hailee Steinfield.
Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret will be featured in the Newport Beach Film Festival, which will include a post screening Q&A with novel writer Judy Blume, director Kelly Fremon Craig, in addition producers Brooks and Julie Answell. The film has earned a remarkable reputation having achieved 99% on rotten tomatoes, with many calling it the best reviewed wide-release of 2023.
