DC Films to Launch on Netflix

A variety of popular hit films in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) such as Wonder Woman and Batman v Superman are set to premiere on Netflix in the US in December. By: Dylan Low

The licensing of such titles, announced in a post by the Netflix US Twitter account, is a certain indication that major studios are inclined to sell content to Netflix, an approach they discontinued since 2019 as they showcased programmes exclusively for their own streaming services.

A total of eight films are confirmed to screen on Netflix in December, as Man of Steel, Suicide Squad, Justice League, Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 1984 and The Suicide Squad are included as the DCEU titles.

The strategy does not come off surprising, with Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) chief financial officer Gunnar Wiedenfels recently labelling the content warehousing approach utilised by most streaming platforms in the previous years “incomprehensible.”

WBD, which owns DC Entertainment, has also started non-exclusively licensing older TV titles to Netflix earlier this year such as HBO titles Insecure, Ballers and Six Feet Under.

Netflix in the US has overseen high viewership for legal drama Suits, a licensed title that spanned nine seasons on NBCUniversal-owned USA Network from years 2011 to 2019.

Recently in a shareholder letter showcasing its third-quarter revenue, Netflix commented about the fact its rivals are now increasingly likely to license their content.

“As the competitive environment evolves, we may have increased opportunities to license more hit titles to complement our original programming,” spokesperson for Netflix shared.

“We believe this will deliver additional value for our members (engagement), as well as for rights holders who benefit from the increased awareness and revenue that Netflix delivers, in addition to the new life that success on Netflix can drive (examples such as Friends, The Office, a new series from the Suits franchise),” he added.
