The Marvels Stumbles at the Box Office to $47 million

Despite critical and audience acclaim, the film's lacklustre performance raises questions about the franchise's box office prowess in comparison to its predecessors. By: Wee Yan Ling

The Marvels, is the sequel of 2019’s blockbuster Captain Marvel and it had debuted below expectations with the $47 million figure in stark contrast to the $513 million opening weekend of its predecessor. The lack of box office success is particularly notable given that it falls short behind the standard set by the 32 previous films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2008’s Iron Man. 

Marvel Studios’ other 2023 releases had surpassed the $100 million mark in their opening weekend. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 secured the fourth-highest grossing spot for the year in the U.S. while Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania had clinched the 8th position.

Despite the financial struggles, the film had maintained likeness from critics and audiences with a 62% critical approval and 84% audience approval from Rotten Tomatoes.
