Dune Sequel Brought Two Weeks Forward
Dune: Part Two will be heading to the big screen earlier than anticipated. The production companies Warner Bros. and Legendary will now showcase the film on March 1, 2024, two weeks earlier than its initial date of March 15, 2024. By: Dylan Low
This announcement was made following Universal postponed Ryan Gosling’s The Fall Guy from March 1 to May 3, creating a gap that theatres wanted Dune 2 to make up for. Warners and Legendary are optimistic that the film project will appeal towards the spring break audience with this new release date. Like Oppenheimer which was specially screened in premium formats that cost higher for viewers, Dune 2 is made available in many varying formats such as Imax and Imax 70mm. It will broadcast for two to three weeks in Imax, possibly for a longer period depending on other films opening after Dune 2.
This comes across as consolation for Dune fans, who were expecting for the project to release earlier this month before postponed due to the actor’s strike. Warners and Legendary did not want to broadcast the film without the help of the main cast Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet to promote and market the movie. With the first Dune film released under difficult circumstances involving the pandemic and day-and-date showcase on HBO Max, they aimed to screen the sequel in normal circumstances.
Denis Villeneuve will reprise his role as Director, with new names added to the franchise including Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken and Léa Seydoux. Recurring cast members comprises Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista and Josh Brolin.
If everything goes smoothly, Villeneuve has stated his interest to make one more Dune film to conclude his works on the franchise, a novel adaptation of sci-fi author Frank Herbert.
“Part One is more of a contemplative movie. Part Two is an action-packed, epic war movie. It is much denser. We went to all new locations,” mentioned Villeneuve at CinemaCon in April. “I didn’t want a feeling of repetition. It’s all new sets. Everything is new.”
