HBO’s upcoming docuseries, Murder in Boston: Roots, Rampage & Reckoning, dives into the catastrophic murder of pregnant newlywed Carol Stuart and the racial agitation that brews in the city. It is set to premiere on December 4. The three-part docuseries aims to break down the mortifying ordeal that shook Boston to its core.
The horror began when Charles “Chuck” Stuart reported a shooting. He had claimed that a black man had approached the car and forced them to drive to Boston’s Mission Hill neighbourhood. The assailant then shot him in the stomach and fatally shot his pregnant wife, attorney Carol Stuart.
As the city reeled from the tragedy, racial tensions were heightened and aggravated further. This is due to the historical wounds from the 1974 battle over school desegregation and busing. Hate crimes against the black people were on the rise as the search for the shooter was amplified in the predominantly Black and Latino Mission Hill neighbourhood.
The narrative took a twist when the police arrested William Bennet, black man with a criminal record. However, one reporter on the case had serious reservations.
The plot twist surfaced when Chuck Stuart committed suicide and his brother, Matthew Stuart confessed to the police to reveal the real identity of the killer, Chuck Stuart. The truth came to light, it was a plot involving an insurance scam as the brothers disposed of the couple’s belongings off the bridge in revere shortly after the shooting.
Murder in Boston delves into the layers of deception while offering audiences a compelling look into one of Boston’s most nefarious crimes.
