Women’s Super League Sets New Viewership Record on BBC and Sky Sports

The Women’s Super League (WSL) match which showcased Chelsea thrash Liverpool 5-1 was the most watched WSL game of all time, mentioned by UK’s free-to-air broadcast platform BBC. By: Dylan Low

The game between the reigning champions Chelsea and Liverpool showcased on the BBC1 platform, attracting staggering audience numbers of 796,000 and peak viewership of 955,000. The broadcaster also received 141,000 requests to watch the fixture through its on-demand service, BBC iPlayer.

This surpasses BBC’s screening of the Arsenal vs Aston Villa match-up which was previously the most viewed match of the 2023/24 season, amassing 766,000 viewers.

Sky Sports announced it oversaw record-breaking audience numbers during the WSL tournament, after Sunday’s Manchester derby. IIn the game that Manchester City claimed a 3-1 win over Manchester United, it brought in an average number of 485,000 views that topped at 589,000.

As for the WSL competition, the BBC will be televising one game from each match week, as Sky retains the rights to screen two games a week. Any games not broadcasted on both BBC or Sky platforms are accessible to watch complimentary on the FA Player.

The next WSL matchup screening on the BBC is Bristol City vs Manchester United on November 26th, and the Arsenal vs Chelsea fixture on December 10th, screened live on BBC1. On Sunday nights, WSL highlights will also be telecasted on The Women’s Football Show, acknowledged by the streaming platform as the WSL version of Match of the Day on BBC1.
