South Korean cinemas experience a resurgence as 12.12: The Day sweeps the nation with an $11 million opening weekend, marking the second-highest debut of the year. By: Wee Yan Ling
12.12: The Day had set a new record breaking high for the cinema landscape in Korea. Directed by Kim Sung-Soo and embellished with the talented cast, Hwang Jung-Min and Jung Woo-Sung, the box office has amassed a total of $11.2 million opening weekend. The film narrates the story of a nine-hour period in 1979 which revolves around an attempted military coup.
The $14.1 million earrings over the five-day opening run helps to solidify the film as the second-highest-grossing film debut of the year, as it falls closely behind The Roundup: No Way Out.
The impeccable box office performance had catapulted above $10 million which takes the crown for a significant rebound since the Chuseok holiday in late September and only the second time post-summer. The nationwide box office had increased to a massive $14.2 million.
In comparison, Five Nights at Freddy’s had suffered a decline securing the second spot with $1.21 million and a 12-day cumulative total of $4.2 million. The Boy and the Heron had a surge of $257,000 over the weekend, contributing towards its $14.6 million since its premiere.
