Frances Sternhagen, the iconic actress celebrated for her roles in beloved TV series Cheers and Sex and the City, has passed away at the age of 93. By: Wee Yan Ling
Late actress Frances Sternhagen had died peacefully of natural causes in New Rochelle, NY on November 27th, 2023. Sternhagen is survived by six children, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
John Carlin, son of Sternhagen, had turned to Instagram to pay tribute to his mother and shared the time and cause of death. Carlin displayed throwback photos of the late actress and displayed his gratitude towards his mother, “remarkable gift of an artist and human being.”
To honour his mother, Carlin had revealed that he would be performing in London over the weekend.
Sternhagen was renowned for her portrayals of overbearing matriarchs on television and has amassed recognition for her portrayals as Dr. Carter’s grandmother on ER, Esther Calvin on Cheers which crowned her with two Emmy nominations, and Bunny MacDougal in the series of Sex and the City. She then received her third Emmy nomination for the series.
She has also attained Tony Awards for The Good Doctor and The Heiress. Sternhagen also received Tony nominations for her work in The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window, Equus, Angel, On Golden Pond and Morning’s at Seven.
