Beyoncé Concert Film Estimated for $20 Million Debut

“Renaissance,” a concert film written, directed and produced by Beyoncé, is expected to make around $17 to $20 million in its opening weekend. By: Dylan Low

The movie will premiere in up to 2,539 US locations, alongside 94 worldwide territories such as Mexico, the UK, South Africa, Kenya, Australia and Germany. Internationally, the film is aiming to generate $30 million to $40 million in its first weekend.

Like Taylor Swift’s film The Eras Tour, which made waves at the box office in October with $92 million domestically and accumulated $250 million worldwide until now, Renaissance is special as it is distributed by the exhibitor AMC Theatres and not a conventional studio.

Looking at early estimates and pre-sales, Renaissance will make similar numbers to concert documentaries like This is It by Michael Jackson and Never Say Never by Justin Bieber. They opened to $23 million and $29.5 million in 2009 and 2011 respectively.

These ticket sales will constitute a reasonable opening for Renaissance, not owning a huge budget that can compete with major franchise films. Still, Beyoncé gets to earn 50% of box office revenue, as exhibitors claim the remaining earnings and AMC claims a minor distribution pay. Movie ticket purchases are not expected to compare with the tour’s income, which generated more than $579 million globally and becoming the eighth-highest-grossing tour in history.

Compared to Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour film which is recorded directly from-the-stage of her concert, Beyoncé makes use of a documentary style that showcases to audiences behind the scenes of her most recent stadium tour, with features from popular music hit artists Jay-Z and Blue Ivy, including Diana Ross and Megan Thee Stallion.
