WOWOW Acquires Second Season of Black Camel Pictures, Annika

Premium pay TV broadcaster WOWOW in Japan secures the second season of the acclaimed crime drama, Annika. By: Wee Yan Ling

All3Media International has confirmed that WOWOW, pay TV broadcaster in Japan, has attained the second season of Annika from Black Camel Pictures. Due to the resounding success of the first season, WOWOW has decided to re-license the initial instalment of the series.

The new series sees Nicola Walker (The Split, Unforgotten) reprise her role as DI Annika Strandhed and debuted as a UKTV Original on leading crime drama channel Alibi in August and on MASTERPIECE in the US in October. Series one also launched earlier this year in primetime spot on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Based on the popular BBC Radio 4 play Annika Stranded, Annika portrays Nicola Walker as DI Annika Strandhed. The head of specialist Marine Homicide Unit is sharp, witty and enigmatic. Annika is tasked with handling the unexplained, gory and seemingly indecipherable murders that took place in and around the waterways of Scotland. The compelling and engaging narrative leaves viewers on the edge of their seats as Annika breaks the fourth wall and shares her wry observations on the case and her life.

Ziran (Tony)Tang, VP Sales at All3Media International, commented, "The first season of Annika was a firm favourite among our discerning drama buyers, so we were delighted to be able to bring them a brand-new season packed with more twist-laden cases for Annika and her team to tackle. Detective dramas continue to be a bestseller worldwide, and Annika adds a whole new layer of intrigue to this much-loved genre, as Nicola Walker invites audiences in to hear Annika's thoughts, engaging them and enticing them to solve the crimes with her. With its appeal now proven and a second season delivered, we know Annika's popularity in the international market will continue to go from strength to strength."
