Lupita Nyong’o Becomes Berlin Film Festival Jury President

Lupita Nyong’o, the Oscar-winning Kenyan-Mexican actor and filmmaker, will be helming the international jury of the nearing Berlin Film Festival. She will become the second successive female jury president at the Berlinale, after female actor Kristen Stewart. By: Dylan Low

​​​​​Berlinale directors Mariëtte Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian heaped praise on Nyong’O, saying, “Lupita Nyong’o embodies what we like in cinema: versatility in embracing different projects, addressing different audiences, and consistency to one idea that is quite recognisable in her characters, as diverse as they may look.”

Lupita Nyong’o, who gained popularity with her appearance in 12 Years a Slave, stated she was “deeply honoured to serve as the President of the International Jury of the Berlin International Film Festival.”

“I look forward to celebrating and recognising the outstanding work of filmmakers from around the world,” she further mentioned.

Other than her achievement of best supporting Oscar for her role in 12 Years a Slave. She has claimed the Screen Actors Guild Award, the Critics’ Choice Award, the Independent Spirit Award and the NAACP Image Award. She then gained further acclaim with her character as the warrior spy Nakia in Black Panther and the second film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Her other famous works consist of Us, Little Monsters, Queen of Katwe, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The 355. Her future projects consist of the horror franchise spin-off movie A Quiet Place: Day One.

Nyong’o has also worked behind the camera. She newly executive produced a Sudanese film Goodbye Julia, directed by Mohamed Kordofani. The movie was chosen by the Sudanese National Committee working in exile to contend for international feature films at the Oscars ceremony.
