Netflix Showcases Trailer for Dave Chappelle’s The Dreamer

Streaming platform Netflix has recently unveiled the official trailer to Dave Chapelle’s latest comedy special titled The Dreamer set to premiere on 31st December. By: Dylan Low

The trailer will be recounted by Morgan Freeman, who appears in the special film alongside Chappelle.

“What do you dream about? Not the dreams you have in your sleep: the ones you hold in your heart. Don’t be intimidated by the audacity of your dream — be inspired by it,” Freeman voiceovers in the trailer. “What happens to a dream deferred? Lucky for Dave, he doesn’t know.”

The Dreamer was filmed in Chappelle’s hometown of Washington, D.C., at the Lincoln Theatre, making it Chappelle’s seventh collaboration with Netflix. Stan Lathan, the director of Chappelle's six other specials for the platform, reprises his role to direct The Dreamer.

He initially caused controversy, following his 2021 Netflix special The Closer, where he cracked jokes regarding transgender people, causing company walkouts in October 2021. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos initially shielded the reputable comedian, releasing a statement calling Chappelle “one of the most popular stand-up comedians today” and “as with our other talent, we work hard to support their creative freedom — even though this means there will always be content on Netflix some people believe is harmful.” Sarandos finally claimed that he “screwed up” giving his response to the controversy backlash.

Chappelle’s previous Netflix specials started in 2017 with the release of notable specials named The Age of Spin, Deep in the Heart of Texas Equanimity, The Bird Revelation back in 2017. His other specials were Sticks & Stones and The Closer, which arrived in 2019 and 2021 respectively.
