In a significant development for the horror genre, Jason Blum's Blumhouse and James Wan's Atomic Monster have officially closed their merger deal, marking the consolidation of two major players in the industry. By: Wee Yan Ling
The merger between Jason Blum and James Wan has become a reality after more than a year of anticipation. The announcement was made by Jason Blum in a video that showcased his iconic titles such as The Conjuring and Get Out which positions the united entities as the preeminent homes for horror.
The two have previously worked hand in hand for projects like Night Swim and the successful hit, M3GAN. The longstanding relationship Blumhouse possesses with Universal is seen through their current theatrical release of Night Swim, and it remains intact under the new structure.
Both labels will retain their creative independence in a three-way ownership structure. The majority of the ownership will rest with Blum as stakes are possessed by Wan and Comcast, which is the parent company of NBCUniversal.
Both Blum and Wan view their partnership as a catalyst for increased collaborations and potentially higher film output. Jason Blum has also displayed his hope to double the theatrical releases every year as he cites the partnership’s potential to yield six to eight theatricals a year.
