New Star Wars Prequel to Grace the Theatres

Baby Yoda is making waves on the silver screen! By: Cassia Ling

Jon Favreau will take the director’s chair and helm the upcoming Star Wars gig, The Mandalorian & Grogu, which will undergo productions later the year.

The film adapts from Disney+’s The Mandalorian series, which starts off the series with a bounty hunter who conducts espionage, played by Pedro Pascal, on the run with the highly adored alien Grogu, more affectionately known as Baby Yoda. It still remains hazy as to how the film will be orchestrated to fit the timeline of the live-action series, which has released three seasons and the fourth feature in production.

“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” Favreau said in a statement. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

The upcoming project marks a first, ever since 2019’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which grossed $1 billion internationally and served as the grand finale to the original nine-chapter chronicle. Though previously announced that fans can expect new instalments to the space opera series, plans never came to fruition. Since then, Star Wars has released two or more live-action TV shows in the Mando-verse, The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka, and the imminent Skeleton Crew. Favreau will co-produce with Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy and Ahsoka creator, Dave Filoni. Filoni will also be working to produce the sequel to Ahsoka, starring Rosario Dawson.

“Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen,” Kennedy said.

The Mandalorian & Grogu will lead Lucasfilm’s upcoming feature-length development slate, including a separate Star Wars film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold and Filoni.

Though Disney’s release calendar is on the change constantly, an untitled Star Wars film is slated to debut May 22, 2026. Another which narrates a remote galaxy sets for December 18, 2026 while a third Star Wars escapade marks for December 17, 2027. Details of the gigs have yet to be illuminated by Disney.
