Alienoid 2 Dominates Korean Box Office with $3.57 million Opening

The South Korean box office has witnessed the triumphant return of sci-fi fantasy, Alienoid 2 despite the weekend filled with animated delights and thought-provoking documentaries. By: Wee Yan Ling

Directed by Choi Dong-hoon, the sequel has managed to secure a substantial market share of 39% amassing a total of $4.77 million over the initial five days of release, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by Korean Film Council. Alienoid 2’s success is derived after its predecessor in 2022 when Director Choi Dong-hoon was promoting the second instalment as a significant improvement over the first.

 

Whereas tailing closely behind is Wish, who has just fallen off from the first place by Alienoid 2. Wish has garnered earnings of $1.58 million and has dropped 52% from its debut weekend. Meanwhile, 12.12: The Day has maintained the third position and is standing at $94.6 million. 

 

Other notable releases included Illumination Entertainment’s U.S. animation, Migration, which debuted in fifth place with $772,000 over the weekend and $994,000 over the opening five days. Japanese animation, New Dimension! Crayon Shinchan the Movie: Battle of Supernatural Powers - Flying Sushi arrived at the sixth place during its fourth weekend, amassing a total of $6.04 million. 

 

The documentary, Kim Dae Jung On the Road entered the film scene on 10 January and has gained $196,000 over the weekend during the opening five days. The film delves into the journey of Kim Dae Jung, Korea’s 15th president and a Nobel Peace Prize-winner.
