DAZN UK will be lifting the paywall for their offering of women’s football January 23rd onwards, with the launch of the campaign promoting the growth and investment in the sport. By: Dylan Low
The sports streaming platform’s new deal for women’s football is named in tribute to a 1967 women’s football tournament that happened in Deal, Kent where the English FA’s ban of women’s football was abolished.
DAZN claimed the new deal encourages clubs to elevate the match day experience, by showcasing better facilities and increasing marketing and for sponsors to sanction a long-term investment horizon. In addition to the media industry and broadcasters providing broad distribution, premium coverage and enhanced marketing, rights holders will be partnering with clubs, brands, and broadcasters to improve media value and drive growth.
DAZN,
which previously broadcasted FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023, will make their
women football content complimentary for UK subscribers. This is inclusive of
free-to-air screening of the UWCL, WSL, Liga F, Frauen Bundesliga, Saudi
Women’s Premier League, Serie A, D1 Arkema, NWSL and other domestic leagues.
The
company announced not long ago it is now the world’s largest investor in
women’s football broadcasting. The DAZN women division debuted last year,
helmed by Hannah Brown and Esmeralda Negron, after the purchase of their
founded ata football platform. The sports streamer is also currently operating
a free YouTube channel on women’s football.
In
regards to the newfound agreement, Negron said, “We are committed to fostering
and cultivating fandom for women’s football. Women’s football needs investment
to realise its potential – developing a first-party relationship with fans
across all demographics to scale its audience and become commercially viable.
Grassroots football has the potential to play a crucial role in driving the
growth of the sport. Connecting the grassroots market to the women’s
professional game is crucial in establishing a fanbase for women’s football
from an early age.”
“Women’s
football is the most compelling sports investment opportunity for a
generation,” Brown continued. “To realise its potential the game needs another
moment of bravery and rule breaking just like that 1967 tournament.”
