Mean Girls’ Rules the Box Office with $11.7m

Sleeper hit Anyone But You becomes the highest-grossing R-rated comedy since 2016, proving rom-coms' theatrical viability. By: Wee Yan Ling

Paramount’s Mean Girls musical has emerged victorious as it clinched the top spot with an $11.7 million weekend gross. The success is contradicted with the struggle faced by the weekend’s sole new release, I.S.S. which debuted with $3 million.

The slowdown in new content is attributed to last year’s labour strikes which resulted in the production delays, hence, impacting both theatres and studios. Despite the 59% drop in its second weekend, the Tina Fey-penned Mean Girls has accumulated a domestic total of $50 million.

I.S.S. by Bleecker Street is a thriller directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, failed to achieve a stellar lift-off as it attains the position of No.7 with a C- CinemaScore.

In the top 10, Amazon/MGM’s Beekeeper retains its second place as it garners $8.5 million domestically and adds $14.2 million overseas for an international tally of $75.2 million. Warner Bros’ Wonka had maintained its standing at the third place as it amassed a domestic total of $187.2 million.

On the other hand, Sony’s rom-com sleeper hit Anyone But You received the fourth spot as it surpassed its $100 million worldwide and Universal’s animated film Migration rounded out the top five with $5.3 million domestically and $191.6 million globally.
