If the deal
is made official, it is anticipated to be priced in the seven-figure range. The
acquisition was previously competitive with at least three companies contending
for the project.
Daughters made its debut at this year’s Sundance Film
Festival, where it claimed the Audience Award in Documentary Competition and
was named as the overall Festival Favourite. The production of the film spanned
up to eight years.
In a
review, Lisa Kennedy heaped praise on the film, stating that it adds “depth and
dimension to stories of incarceration.” Kennedy further mentioned, “The film is
rife with visually lyrical moments that connect viewers with the young ones’
sorrows, fears, insights and hopes. In the hands of the directors,
cinematographer Michael Cambio Fernandez and editors Troy Lewis and Adelina
Bichis, the documentary exercises the kind of compassionate attention that
leaves room for the girls to be girls.”
The film
was also seen to have garnered positive spotlight with a 100% “fresh” rating on
Rotten Tomatoes.
Producers
of Daughters include Lisa Mazzotta, Justin Benoliel, Mindy Goldberg, Sam
Bisbee, Kathryn Everett, Laura Choi Raycroft, James Cunningham. Paul Rachman
featured as the co-producer.
Kerry
Washington also joined as one of the executive producers of the documentary and
made an appearance at the Sundance festival, alongside the filmmakers and cast members.
