Apple TV+ has announced that Elba is slated to reprise his role as negotiator Sam Nelson in season two of the intense drama, which quickly rose in popularity to become a top show when it was released last year. By: Dylan Low
Showcased
in real-time, the series talks about Nelson on a seven-hour plane trip from
Dubai to London which is hijacked by terrorists. A veteran negotiator, Nelson
quickly comes in to attempt resolving the situation before anyone dies – but
soon realizes there is more to the hijackers’ plot than what it seems. Archie
Panjabi, Christine Adams, Max Beesley and Ben Miles will also be part of the
cast.
“I was
floored by the overwhelming audience response after Season 1,” Elba mentioned.
“It’s top secret what new situation unfolds for Sam Nelson, but I can assure
you we will bring the high octane back!”
Idris will
also be the show’s executive producer joined by creators George Kay and Jim
Field Smith’s company Idiotlamp Productions. 60Forty Films’ Jamie Laurenson,
Hakan Kousetta and Tom Nash will also executive produce.
Field
Smith, director of Netflix original series Criminal, will be
participating as lead director for the series.
Jay Hunt,
Apple TV+’s creative director for Europe, announced, “Global audiences were on
tenterhooks watching Idris’ riveting performance in Hijack, and we’re
thrilled to be working again with 60Forty and Idiotlamp on an equally
compelling Season 2.”
Plot
details for the new season have yet to be unveiled, however Elba previously
mentioned he would reprise his role as Nelson if he and the team could find the
right storyline.
“I’m open
to that character coming back. I think if people were compelled to like the
character, then I’m in,” Elba stated. “But it’s kind of like — he’s not a cop
[so] what would be the acceptable Sam Nelson return? And if I’m honest, I’m not
sure. I’d like that, but I just don’t want to put him on another hijack.”
